Baby Carrier Buying Guide
Baby carriers are a convenient and secure way to transport your baby when you're out and about.
What to Consider?
Sling or Carrier?
Make the switch from slings to carriers only after the baby is able to support their head sufficiently. Most carriers are made for babies of 7kg or higher, although some come with additional neck support for newborn babies.
Comfort
Padding is essential to ensure that you are comfortable when holding your baby for a longer period of time. The padding should help distribute the weight evenly and should not dig into your shoulders.
Carrying-style
Different carriers allow for different ranges of carrying. Most carriers offer front and back carrying, some offer hip carrying as well.
Features
Certain carriers come with additional features (pockets, detachable/foldable sleeping hood). Other carriers are more basic. Choose between a wide range of carriers based on your needs.
Security
The baby must fit snugly into the carrier with their back and legs supported. Adjust the side and back straps until the baby is securely fastened, such that they do not slip out. If your baby is smaller in size/weight, a more flexible carrier might be better.
Ergonomic support
As babies grow they can become a very heavy weight for parents to carry. It's important to choose a carrier which provides strong support around the hips, back, and shoulders in order to distribute this weight properly. Your baby's hips and back should also be held in an upright position in order to prevent curling up or slumping.

Tips
- TICKS rule for safe babywearing:
T - tight, sling should hug your baby close
I - in view, your baby should always be visible
C - as close to your chin as possible
K - keep chin off chest
S -supported back - Try out your carrier before you buy it at most stores in Singapore (Mothercare, Baby Slings and Carriers).
- Carrying your baby facing outward is not recommended as it puts undue pressure on the groin and does not provide support for the legs.
- Front carrying is best for the first few months, giving your baby skin to skin contact.
- After 5 months babies become more curious and can support their head - carry them on your back to allow them to engage with their surroundings.
